Material

Material

All different materials used for the production of the MEHROTRA products are currently sourced from India. We use recycled, upcycled and natural materials, which have been consciously chosen, from main fabric to thread.

Silk

Silk is a natural material and its properties makes it one of the most durable natural fibres. Silk is hypoallergenic in its natural condition due to its natural protein structure, and adapts to body temperature making it a transeasonal material which is wearable both in summer and in winter.

Wool

We have chosen to use wool – a completely natural and biodegradable material, which keeps you comfortable regardless of season. Wool keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer.

Wool is a long-lasting fabric, allowing you to keep your wool scarf for a long time if proper care is taken. Due to its antibacterial properties this material does not require frequent washing, rather air the scarf frequently to keep it fresh.

Upcycled silk saris

We use uppcycled fabric for a part of our collection. By repurposing silk saris (the traditional Indian dress for women) we create new products from something that has already had a previous life.

All patterns vary depending on the original sari making every new item created unique.

The silk saris are washed and cleaned before they go into production and if any parts of the fabric is damaged this part is removed.

Cotton

The majority of cotton we use is sourced in accordance with BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) and goes under the name of Better Cotton.

Better Cotton initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of cotton production and improve livelihoods and economic development in cotton producing areas

By sourcing cotton in accordance with the BCI standards MEHROTRA aims to be a part of BCI’s efforts to generate market demand for Better Cotton as a sustainable mainstream commodity.

Watergrass

Watergrass is a natural fiber which age beautifully with time. As a natural fiber it dries with time and cracks may appear.

It is a fragile material and should be handled with love and care.
